Mission Blue is inspired by the vision of its founder, Dr. Sylvia Earle.
Winning the 2009 TED prize, Sylvia made this wish to change the world:
“I wish to ignite public support for a global network of marine protected areas, hope spots, large enough to save and restore the ocean.”
Hope Spots are special places that are critical to the health of the ocean. About 12% of the land around the world is now under some form of protection as national parks, world heritage sites, monuments and sanctuaries, but only about 1% of the ocean is protected in any way.
Our living ocean generates 70% of the oxygen in our atmosphere and sequesters carbon emissions that have risen over the last century. It regulates the climate, weather and chemistry of the planet. Over two-thirds of the planet’s surface is ocean and its volume represents more than 90% of the living space – most of life on Earth lives in the ocean. Unfortunately, our knowledge of the ocean and the life within it is far less than our impact upon this vast realm.
Mission Blue is committed to inspiring a sea change in public awareness and support for marine protected areas worldwide. Dr. Earle’s wish catalyzed people and organizations globally and launched initiatives urgently needed to protect and restore the ocean.
Since its inception, Mission Blue has grown in scale, effectively building interest and momentum with partners around the world to build networks of marine protected areas that maintain healthy biodiversity, provide a carbon sink, generate life-giving oxygen, preserve critical habitat and allow low-impact activities like ecotourism to thrive.
